Overview: At 3,000 years old Nesebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe and is well known for its' monuments.and architecture of the Middle Ages and the National Revival period. The town of Nesebar is situated on a small rocky peninsula in the North part of the Bourgas bay. Nesebar is clearly divided into Old Nesebar (the historic old city) occupying the entire peninsular and New Nesebar sprawling along the coastline on the mainland. Old and New Nesebar are linked by a narrow 300 metre-long strip. As the alleys of the old town are too narrow visitors are not allowed to enter by car. There is a convenient parking area at the entrance to the old city. Old Nesebar, with its' uneven cobbled streets, is a pleasing mix of extremely old houses and partially wooden houses built 200-300 years ago. Several million tourists visit Old Nesebar each year so the town can be quite crowded.

Accommodation: There are many Pensions and small hotels in the old town. Vacation rentals are plentiful and there are numerous campsites around the town.If you are staying anywhere between Burgas and Varna it is possible to visit Nesebar for a day trip.

Beaches: The beach, in the new part, is 4 km long. North and south of the peninsula there are stretches of beach covered with the finest sand along the Black Sea coast. To the north these are linked with the beaches of Sunny Beach.

Awards: In 1956 Nesebar was proclaimed an archaelogical and architectural reserve. 1983 was the year its' cultural monuments were included in UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list.

History: The town of Nesebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe. It is the successor of the ancient Thracian settlement of Mesambria founded in the 2nd century AD. Since 510 AD it was turned into Greek colony town by Dorian settlers. They called it Mesambria and turned it a rival to the town of Apollo for the Black Sea trade. There was a theatre and a temple of the Greek God Apollo in it. Brass and silver money were coined there, and in the 3rd century AD - gold too. It was occupied in 72 AD by a Roman garrison.

The town was of secondary importance during the Roman era. It started to play an important role again in 3rd to 4th century. Around the year 680 AD the town was an Episcopal centre, and in 7th - 8th centuries - an important, strong and protected Byzantine naval base. In 812 AD Khan Krum conquered the town. In 864 Boris I yielded the possession of the town to Byzantine, but King Simeon re-captured it. Since the 11th century the Slav name Messebar or Nessebar has been used together with the original name Mesambria. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom the town rulers were either Bulgarians or Byzantines. The peak of its development was during the reign of King Alexander I when the town was one of the most important centres in the Bulgarian State. The crusaders led by Amedei VI of Savoy captured the town in 1366 and gave it to the Byzantines. The town was enslaved by the Turks in 1371.

The town kept its importance as an important harbour during the Turkish slavery: ships were built; corns, wood, etc. were exported. After the liberation it was turned into a small fishing town. In 1956 the town was proclaimed an architectural and archeological reserve.

Sights to visit:

Sunny Beach - situated immediately to the north of Nesebar. A boat ride from Nessebur to Sunny Beach can be lots of fun.

Pomorie - an interesting old town only a few km south of Nesebar

Getting around Nessebar

1. On foot - Nessebar is not very large and you can actually go everywhere on foot
2. By road - Cars are not allowed on the peninsular (parking is available outside)
3. By taxi -  There are plenty of Yellow Taxis around
4. By train - The open air train will take you from the New Town to the gates of the old Nessebar, through the recently built walk along the coast
5. By bus -  Buses are not allowed on the peninsular

Location
Old Nessebar occupies a small, rocky island in the Black Sea, connected with the mainland (New Nesebar) by an artificial isthmus. The town can be found between Varna (90 km) and Burgas (25 km)

By road - Nesebar lies on the main road between Varna and Burgas, so it's very easy to get there by bus or car.

Climate: Bulgaria enjoys a beautiful blooming spring, dry and hot summer, long and pleasant autumn, and mild winter with lots of opportunities for skiing.
