Overview: A self-governing Briitish Overseas Territory, Anguilla is located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean and is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands. Anguilla is the main island and there are also many smaller uninhabited islands and Cays. The island of Anguilla, whose capital is The Valley, is approx. 26km x 5km and has a population of approx. 13,500. Originally Anguilla was settles by Amerindian tribes who had travelled from South America. Militarily, Anguilla is a protectorate of the United Kingdom. The U.K. is responsible for Anguilla's military defense, but there are no armed forces on the island. Tourism in Anguilla is a rapidly expanding industry although non-residents are not permitted to own land. The East Caribbean Dollar is the official currency although the United States Dollar is widely accepted. The majority of the people in Anguilla speak a variety of English influenced by the British. There are other languages spoken including Spanish and Chinese as these were the languages of some of the immigrants over the years.
By air - Anguilla's airport is Wallblake Airport providing connections to several other Caribbean islands. There are no direct flights to/from the USA or Europe as the airport is not able to take large jet planes
By ferry - Anguilla is linked by regular 20-minute ferries to the nearby Netherlands Antilles island of Saint Martin
By bus/train - Taxis are the only form of public transport on the island

Climate: tropical; moderated by northeast trade winds. The average temperature is from about 81°F (27°C) to 86°F (30°C). The most rain falls in September and October and the last in February and March. June to November is the hurricane season.
Terrain: flat and low-lying island of coral and limestone. Generally the soil is of poor quality and supports only scrub vegetation
