Overview: Armenia is a former Soviet republic and is bordered by Turkey, Iran, Georgia and Azerbaijan and is situated just where eastern Asia meets western Europe. Armenia became a part of the Soviet Union in 1922 but it re-established its' independance in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. Armenia now operates a market economy and is ranked the world's 31st most economically-free nation. Increased trade has resulted from closer ties with Europe, the Commonwealth of Independant States and Europe. Vital oil and gas supplies are brought in as a result good relations with Iran and Georgia. Armenia is now a presidential representative democratic republic.

Armenia is divided into ten provinces. The capital city of Yerevan has special administrative status.

Armenia is fully involved in international sport being members of  the IOC (International Olympic Committe), the International Ice Hockey Federation and the Union of European Football Associations. Armenia contains the Biblical mountains of Ararat. It is upon Mount Ararat which Noah's Ark is believed to have come to rest. Armenia has good relations with nearly every country in the world, with two notable exceptions, its immediate neighbours, Azerbaijan and Turkey with closed borders to Azerbaijan after years of war. Members of the Council of Europe, the majority of Armenians favour joining the European Union.
