Overview: Azerbaijan is 400km long x 500km wide and is located where the east of Europe meets the west of Asia. It is bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran and the Caspian Sea with an 800km coastline. All the rivers in Azerbaijan drain into the Caspian Sea. It was formerly the Republic of Azerbaijan and gained independance in 1991 whereupon it became a member of the International Monetary Fund & the World Bank. Azerbaijan is divided into 59 rayons, 11 city districts, and the autonomous republic of Nakhchivan. It is rich in natural gas and oil as well as gold, silver, titanium, copper and many other metals. The South Caucaus Pipeline transports gas to many European countries. It also has vast areas of agricultural land and wood resources. Enormous reserves of forest are found in the Great Caucasus, Talysh Mountains and Lesser Caucasus. 
The largest city in Azerbaijan is Baku, in the region of Absheron, with a population of 1.2 million. Of the country's total population of 8 million roughly half live in rural areas while half live in the cities. The cuisine of Azerbaijan is based on fish, locally reared meat, saffron rice and black tea. Article 48 of the Azerbaijan Constitution gives its' people freedom of religion. Approximately 85% of the population are Moslems, with Christians, Jews and Jehova's Witnesses making up the remaining minorities. Azerbaijan architecture is a mix of West and East with many entries in the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. The modern subways in the city of Baku are noted for their extravagant decoration.

Terrain: Large, flat Kur-Araz Ovaligi (Kura-Araks Lowland) (much of it below sea level) with Great Caucasus Mountains to the north, Qarabag Yaylasi (Karabakh Upland) in west; Baku lies on Abseron Yasaqligi (Apsheron Peninsula) that juts into Caspian Sea.
