Overview: Bangladesh is officially known as the 'People's Republic of Bangladesh' and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations. It is bordered on all sides by India, with the exception of a small border with Burma (southeast) and the Bay of Bengal (north). It is the 7th most populated country in the world. Bangladesh became part of the newly formed region of Pakistan but gained independance in 1971. Since then it has suffered from natural disasters (monsoons and cyclones) and widespread poverty. However, since the early 1990s the poverty rate has dropped by approximately 20%.
History: Civilization can be traced back 4,000 years in the early Bengal region. Traders from Europe arrived in Bangladesh in the late 15th century. The influence of these traders grew until the country was taken over by the British East India Company. There was a bloody rebellion in 1857 and this resulted in the transfer of power to the British Crown. Bangladesh achieved independance in 1971 after the nine month long Bangladesh Liberation War in which 90,000 prisoners of war were taken.
