Overview: A land-locked country in eastern Europe, Belarus is bordered by Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia. The capital city of Belarus is Minsk and many of the country's 9.85 million population live in the urban areas surrounding this and the capital cities of the other regions. Belarus is divided into 6 regions (voblasts) and each has a capital city to which it owes its' name. The government of Belarus replaced the currency of the Soviet Ruble in 1992 with the Belarusian Ruble. Talks contiune between Russia and Belarus about establishing a shared currency. A state owned television station is the largest media organisation in Belarus and runs several TV and radio stations. The traditional cuisine of Belarus is mainly vegetables, meat and bread. Food is slow-cooked or stewed and it is common for the people of Belarus to eat a light breakfast and two other, larger, meals.
History: After having been under the control of a variety of its' neighbours, Belarus became part of the Soviet Union in 1919 and declared independance in 1991, following the widespread collapse of the Soviet Union. Almost 1/3rd of the Belarussian population, and a significant part of its' economy was lost during World War II. Belarus and Russia remain close trading partners with Belarus being entirely reliant on Russia for export and for the import of its' raw materials. The Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986 has had a dramatic affect on Belarus. Much of the fallout (70%) landed on Belarus and approximately 20% of Belarus land is now adversely affected by the radiation.

Politics: A presidential republic, Belarus is governed by a President, elected every 6 years, and a National Assembly. The lower house (House of Representatives) appoints the prime minister, recommends foreign and domestic policy and makes amendments to the constitution. As the capital city, Minsk was awarded a charter of self-rule by the national government and is run by a committee.
Industry: Mainly manufacturing and agriculture. Heavy machinery, agricultural and energy products. Almost 25% of the working population of Belarus are employed in factories.
Location: Eastern Europe, east of Poland
Size: slightly smaller than Kansas, United States of America
Climate: cold winters, cool and moist summers; transitional between continental and maritime
Terrain: generally flat and contains much marshland. 40% of Belarus is forested. 11,000 lakes and three major rivers.
Sights to see: There are 4 World Heritage sites in Belarus. These are:
- Niasvizh Castle - owned by the same family since 1533
- Struve Geodetic Arc - a chain of survey triangulations starting in Hammerfest, Norway and stretching to the Black Sea. It is shared with 9 other countries
- Belovezhskaya Pushcha - an ancient woodland stretching across the border of Belarus and Poland
- Mir Castle - in the town of Mir and dating back to the 15th century
