Stone-Age and Bronze-Age people, Romans and Phoenicians, Arabs, Normans and Carthaginians, Castilians, French and British have all occupied the islands over the centuries. Malta became independent from the British in 1964. Malta was awarded the George Cross medal from King George VI in 1942 for its' firm stand against Hitler's massive bombing campaign during World War II.
