 Nairobi is now the capital of and largest city in Kenya, and lies on the Nairobi River to the south of the country. It is also capital of the administrative Area of Nairobi. The 1999 census recorded the population of Nairobi as between 3 and 4 million. Nairobi has a marked mix of wealthy, so-called middle class and poor communities. The poorest suburbs are literally shanty towns where, if they are lucky enough to have a job, the wages can be as little as US$1 a day.
Overview: Nairobi is multicultural city made up of Somalians Sudanese and Indians with many churches, temples and mosques. Nairobi is lies between Kampala and Mombasa and close to the Rift Valley. To the east are the Ngong hills, to the north Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro is to the south-east. The Masai Mara and Amboselli game reserves are within easy reach. The Nairobi River and its tributaries traverse through the Nairobi Province.

History: The building of the Uganda Railway which joins Uganda with the east coast of Africa was responsible for the founding of Nairobi, initially as a supply depot. Nairobi replaced Mombassa in 1905 as the capital and continued to grow under British rule. Influences of British colonialism are everywhere. In 1998 the US Embassy in Nairobi was bombed by Al-Qaida killing over 200 civilians.

Getting around Nairobi, Kenya
- By road - the roads in and around the city of Nairobi are good, but outside the urbanisation they are still in the dark ages. Huge ruts and unmade tracks will wreck your car very quickly.
- By train - the principle route by train is between Nairobi and Mombassa, extending west to Uganda, built by the British when Kenya was a colony.
- By bus - Most of the country's bus companies are based in Nairobi and serve the rest of Kenya from here

Location Nairobi lies in the southern portion of Kenya on the rail route from Mombassa on the east coast to Uganda in the west. Almost immediately to the west is the Rift Valley and beyond the Massai Mara. To the north is Mount Kenya and to the south-east Amboselli

By air - Nairobi has it's own international airport which receives regular and frequent flights from all over the world
By train - you can get to Nairobi by train from either the east coast of Africa at Mombassa or from Uganda in the west.
Climate: The summer months are sunny and warm without being blisteringly hot. The winters are mild but with chilly evenings and rainfall moderate with most rain falling between the autumn and the summer.
Terrain: A mix of vast plains and mountains.
