According to Quest Bulgaria magazine, the country's great climate and low cost of living mean it is ideal for those on more limited funds.

In addition, it offers a wealth of opportunities for those looking to keep themselves active during their retirement.

With golf courses galore and an abundance of walking and hiking trails across "breathtaking" countryside, there is plenty to keep buyers busy.

Fishing, water sports and horseriding are also on offer, while the chance to mix with friendly local communities was also a major attraction for retirees, the magazine claimed.

This comes after a report by Hargreaves Lansdown Currency Service revealed that an increasing number of Brits are turning to property in Bulgaria.

Many are seeking to offset the weakening of the pound against the euro by buying in locations where houses are cheaper, it suggested.
