Overview: The official name for the Bahamas is the 'Commonwealth of the Bahamas'. It comprises 29 islands, 100s of cays and more than 2,000 rocks. Lying in the Atlantic Ocean, to the south east of the USA and north of Cuba, The Bahamas remains part of the Commonwealth. Although a sovereign independant nation The Bahamas closely follows the political and legal traditions of the United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state and her representative on the islands holds the title 'Governor General'. The population is estimated at 330,000 and its' capital city is Nassau, on the island of New Providence. Bimini, the Bahamian island closest to the United States of America is known as the Gateway to the Bahamas. The islands of the Bahamas are low lying, rarely rising more than 66ft.

Climate: The Bahamas has a subtropical to tropical climate, and this is tempered significantly by the Gulf Stream. In the summer and autumn hurricanes pass near or through the islands
