It could be argued that Port Douglas is the most fashionable resort in North Queensland. Designer boutiques and 5* restaurants compete for the tourist's $ alongside pizza places, open-fronted pubs and public bars.
Port Douglas is a distinct combination of tropical relaxing paradise and cosmopolitan sophistication set perfectly against the stunning blue waters of the Coral Sea.
A spectacular 70km spectacularly scenic coastal road connects Cairns with picturesque Port Douglas, surrounded by forest and the Coral Sea. It is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage Listed jewels exist; namely the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree & CapeTribulation rainforests.
The golden sands of Port Douglas' Four Mile Beach, on one side of the peninsular, offer relaxing walks and gentle bicycle rides as well as protected & lifesaver-patrolled areas for swimming. The wind off the sea can disguise the true heat of the day so care should be taken not to over-expose. With an excellent year-round climate Port Douglas is a very popular holiday destination for both Australians and overseas visitors.
On the other side of the village, the peaceful waters of its' natural harbour surround a lively and well equipped modern marina. Stylish boutiques, coffee shops & bars, and the comings and goings of the private and tour boats make the marina a very pleasant place to spend some relaxation time.
In addition to the lower-priced pizza and burger restauarnts Port Douglas has more than its' fair share of fine restaurants, catering for all tastes and budgets.
As Port Douglas is the closest resort to the Great Barrier Reef there is an abundance of tour companied vying for custom. From large vessels with glass bottoms and viewing submersibles to smaller, more intimate boats catering mainly for those wishing to snorkel or scuba the reef. Snorkelling is a perfect way to experience reef life and is within the reach of most competent swimmers. An abundance of sea wildlife from turtles, rays, reef shark and more highly coloured fish than you could imagine. The coral by itself would be a natural wonder but the creatures inhabiting it, and living off it, make the reef come alive.
