Lithuania - Real Estate

Lithuania is the largest of the Baltic States (the others being Estonia and Latvia). The exact geographical centre of Europe was certified by the French National Geography Institute (in 1989) as the town of Purnuðkis, 27 km north of the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

The Lithuanian language is one of the world’s oldest surviving languages, and is distantly related to Sanskrit, a religious and literary language in India. Lithuanian has changed less than many other languages and as such has a linguistic link to the past and a special place in the study of languages.

Photo of Lithuania Russian is widely spoken throughout Lithuania, and many Lithuanians also learn English and Polish. Whilst they were staunchly pagan until the 1300s, (Lithuanians worshipped the likes of Perkûnas, God of Thunder) they have been staunch Catholics ever since. In Medieval times Lithuania was a major European power by virtue of its' sheer military might and diplomatic skill. By 1400 Lithuania was an empire stretching to the Black Sea.

Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union on 14th June 1940. It was the first state to leave the former Soviet Union, restoring its' independence to become The Republic of Lithuania on 11th March 1990. Today Lithuania is a full member of the European Union and will join the European currency (the Euro) in 2008.
