About Monterrey

Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the northeastern state of Nuevo León in the country of Mexico. It is the second wealthiest city in Mexico and the ninth in Latin America with a GDP PPP of 130.7 billion dollars in 2012.
It is also the 3rd largest city in Mexico. Monterey is laid out like many American cities, with widespread suburbs surrounding the main metropolitan area.The city sits at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountains, in a 1,800-foot-high valley. The city sits in the shadow of the uniquely shaped 5’700-foot mountain peak called “Cerro de la Silla,” or Saddle Hill.

Chipinque National Park

Chipinque National Park Chipinque National Park is a favorite getaway for nature lovers, hikers, climbers, bird watchers and mountain bikers. It also attracts those who are just seeking a little peace and quiet.

The well kept hiking trails (over 15 km.) and picnic grounds draw big crowds on weekends, especially in the summer when the temperature is well below that of the city. The winding paved road along with an abundance of dirt trails are huge attractions for local bicyclists, especially mountain bikers.

Chipinque is a great place for a relaxing picnic lunch if you arrive at midday. The incredible solitude that this nature preserve offers the residents and visitors to Monterrey is an enormous asset to the city.

Activities

Monterrey, Mexico is a modern city that is easy to navigate for visitors. There is no shortage of activities in Monterrey for everyone to do enjoy.

Aside from the numerous cultural attractions and museums, there are quality restaurants and an active nightlife, and plenty of places to shop in and around the city. The nearby mountains, canyons and desert that surround the city also offers a pleasant diversion. Some of Mexico?s best hiking, mountain biking and cave exploring are nearby. You dont have to go to the beaches or coastal resorts of Mexico to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of this country. Monterrey has a lot to offer to visitors who are traveling on their own or with families.

 

Cola de Caballo

Cola de Caballo  waterfall got its name, which means horse tail, because the shape of the waterfall resembles a real horse tail. You can walk to the falls (almost a mile) from the entrance or you can rent a horse drawn buggy or ride on horseback. You can get very close to the waterfalls, close enough to get wet from the spray.

There are restaurants, snack bars and souvenir stands before you start the easy trip to the falls. Picnic tables are spread out along the river and near the falls. A five star hotel, Hacienda Cola de Caballo is located a short distance before the waterfall and provides a beautiful view of the forest below. The restaurant is said to be a great place to have lunch or dinner, before driving back to the city. A bungee jump is located on the hotel grounds.

Museums

  • Museo del Acero- A non profit science and technology center, providing multiple interactive areas that enforce scientific and technological education, commemorating the history of steel and its industrial development.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO)
  • Museum of Mexican History- pictorial history of Mexico. Interesting displays. Beautiful grounds, on the exact site of the city’s founding.
  • El Obispado- Nuevo Leon Regional Museum featuring historical artifacts from Monterrey.
  • Puppet House Museum- Various puppets (old and new on display. Interesting for all ages.
