Why live or buy property in the Algarve?

		The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal covering about 5400 km2, with fewer than 500,000 permanent inhabitants swelling to well over a million people in the height of the summer. There are about 100 sandy beaches washed by the Atlantic Ocean and, due to the maritime shelf and water currents, the sea temperature can often be surprisingly warm even in some of the winter months. Located on the tip of Europe with the ocean on its southern and western borders, this enviable position gives this region possibly the most unpolluted climate on the European continent.
		The picturesque appeal of the Algarve varies throughout the year. In January and February the coast is painted white with almond blossom shading the many varieties of wild orchids. In March, the perfume of orange blossom mixes with the bloom of acacias. May and June are the time to see the raw beauty of the bare barks of stripped cork trees. July is the time of cherries, strawberries and melons. There is the picking of grapes, figs and almonds in August and September. November is for the gathering of chestnuts for the national festival of Sao Martinho. From December to March the famous sweet juicy Algarve oranges are picked.
		How to get to the Algarve The nearest international airport is at Faro, less than 35 km away. A number of airlines, including British Airways, EasyJet, Monarch, Thomsonfly, Aer Lingus and Ryanair offer direct non-stop scheduled flights from Britain and Ireland to Faro. Also Lisbon Airport is not far away.
		Once in Portugal, many of the hotels have shuttle services to and from major tourist destinations. Alternatively, you can hire a car, and there are also national train and bus services. The Portuguese train system is efficient, inexpensive and well connected. A high speed train travels from the Algarve to Lisbon within three hours, and the Algarve train will take you from Vila Real to Lagos, stopping at all the major towns along the way.
