Situated off the North East coast of Venezuela, the Islands are 1000 sq km. with approximately 250 km of pristine beaches, it was discovered by Columbus in 1498, but not colonized until Conquistadors discovers Pearls in the Coral reef and named the Island after the Greek for Pearl. It's location away from the Hurricanes made it an ideal hideaway for Pirates and Naval Ships, Harboured at San Carlos Borromeo Castle.
Today the beaches, diving, fishing, water sports and weather draw most visitors, but shopping in Porlamar, Nature Reserve of La Restinga and Historical Churches add to the attraction.

Margarita enjoys Duty Free status and is a shopping mecca for the jet-set of Venezuela and tourists for across the globe. With petrol around 10p a gallon, local beer 25p and a hearty meal for 2 for about £5, it's not suprising the locals are always so happy.
Getting There: Direct Flights to Del Caribe International from UK are available from Charter Airlines from £319.00 (Jun) to £539.00 (Dec), or First Choice from £529.00. Although last minute deals can often be found for under £200!
