The town is situated in the south end of the Loudogorie Plateau. It is a historical place because Pliska was the first capital of Danubian Bulgaria.Two kilometers away from the present day town are the remains of the imposing construction of the ancient town. The oldest source of information about the town is the inscription on the stone column of 821 (Khan Omourtag`s) in the vicinity of the village of Chatalar. There are many characteristic and interesting architectural monuments whose remains have been preserved until these days like The Grand and the Small Palace.

The town has hospital, schools, hotels and motels, police station, railway and bus station, restaurants and places for entertainment.

There are regular bus lines to Shumen, Novi Pazar and Kaspichan as well as to other smaller towns and villages in the district. It is only 7km away from Kaspichan railway station where there are connections to Sofia, Varna, Bourgas, Rousse and Silistra.
