It is situated in the heart of the historical centre and is considered to be of great historical importance. he town is about 30km from Bari Airport and about 1 hours drive down to the heel of Italy, Brindisi. Ferries leave daily to the Greek islands from the ports of Bari and Brindisi.

In Roman times, the property was known Vigiliae (Guard Place). Mainly due to the towers built along the town walls that border with the characteristic fishing port.
