The property is situated in the small village of La Mainborgere in the Southern Vendee. 1 km away is the River Yon, winding through a gorge, with canoeing and riding and lovely picnic spots on the river bank. 5 minutes away is the Lac du Mareuillet for fishing and picnics. The house is within easy reach of the departmental capital of La Roche-sur-Yon (bowling, ice rink, shopping mall). It is about 5km from Mareuil-sur-Lay, the centre of Vendee wine growing country. The nearest beach is at La Tranche-sur-Mer which is about 20 minutes by car through very pretty countryside. The entire Vendee coastline is easily accessible and the beautiful port of La Rochelle with its international airport, is about 40 minutes' drive.

The house sleeps 8 and is very comfortable. The living room is spacious and has a high ceiling which emphasises the airy feel of this room. The kitchen has plenty of storage in the fitted units and comes with fridge, microwave, cooker and full oven and washing machine. The kitchen and living room lead onto a large patio and the attached barn is useful for storing patio furniture, barbecue, firewood etc. There are 3 double bedrooms and a modern bathroom with bath, shower, wash-hand basin and WC.

The Vendee region is an area about the size of Devon with a micro-climate, which makes it the hottest, driest area in France, after the Mediterranean coast. According to the French Meteo, it enjoys almost the same number of sunshine hours as the South of France. The Vendee offers a great variety of sights and activities. Large parts of the region are rural, being made up of tiny farming hamlets, beautiful villages and towns, waterways, fields of sunflowers, corn and fertile vineyards, and the most lovely coastline and beaches.

The departmental capital of La Roche-sur-Yon is an attractive mixture of ancient and modern shops and buildings, lovely tree-lined streets and excellent markets. The river Lay runs through the centre of the pretty village of Mareuil-sur-Lay, about 5 km from the house, the centre for wine growing in the region. Most of the vineyards are open for wine tasting and direct sales. Mareuil also has an excellent supermarket.

The wonderful beaches along the Vendee coastline are well-known throughout France. In high season, the beaches and seaside towns are busy but the roads and shops always seem quiet. The bustling towns of St Jean de Monts and Les Sables d'Olonnes have beaches which are amongst the very best in France and La Tranche, known as Little California, attracts surfboarders in the summer months.

Further inland is the Marais Poitevin, a paradise for wildlife, where 40,000 kms of canals, embroider the landscape. Not far away is the Mervent Forest and the nature reserve of St Denis du Payre, consisting of 207 hectares of marsh islands and flower rich grassland, a haven for rare birds and butterflies.

The picturesque, port of La Rochelle is 40 minutes away by car. Its historic architecture, stunning harbour and port are well worth a visit. From here take a boat to the Ile de Re where no vehicles are permitted. Here you can hire a bike or explore this lovely little island on foot. The airport at La Rochelle has budget flights from a number of UK airports and the drive time to the ferry port of St Malo is just 3½ hours.
