Location
Asciano is a comune with approximately 7000 inhabitants and is part of the province of Siena. It is situated only 20 kms south east of Siena in the heart of the Crete Senesi. The historical town centre was originally Medieval, and there are many wonderful historical monuments and buildings dating from that period still to be found there. The western and southern parts of the area surrounding the town blend into each other dotted with the amazing colours of the natural habitat which characterise the lunar landscape of the crete senesi, the hillsides in particular are striking, they are made mainly of clay and were originally a sea basin, which has left different coloured sediments of sands and mud. The position of the town is ideal as it is easy to reach all parts of the crete senesi including the following wonderful places to visit , Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, San Giovanni d'Asso and Rapolano Terme, the last of which is famous for its central thermal springs where you can restore your body with the wonderful water from the Thermal Springs at San Giovanni and the ancient thermal spring complex Querciolaia. Siena is only half an hours drive by car and the A1 motorway exit at Valdichiana-Bettolle is only 20 minutes away. Perugia, Arezzo are an hour away by car as are many of the most important tourist destinations of the area which are all wonderful places to while away a peaceful day. Rome can be reached in approximately 2 hours by car and Florence in an hour and a half.
