Fivizzano was a wealthy town in medieval times and an important strategic centre when the fortress at Verrucola controlled the surrounding area. The town was for a long time under the influence of Florence, to which it owes much of its style and character.

Today Fivizzano combines a respect for the past with a thriving social and cultural life with many of the town’s events taking place in the central Medici square in front of the XIV century church of Saints Jacopo and Antonio.

The town is a popular stop off for tourists, without being a typical tourist location. The small streets don't really allow for coach tours, but is easy accessed by car or train, which links with Pisa and all major train conections. Spectacularly huge Verrucola castle (See picture) is a delightful example of medieval architecture. Built in the 1300 by Spinetta Melaspina the Greet, it consists of severel buildings dominated by a square keep and still visible are several "layers" of walls with their openings leading to the village below. In the 16th century a church was built beside the castle with its fine sandstone arched open gallery.

Fivizzano is the widest village of Lunigiana. It extends from the Appenines to the Apuan Alps. The numerous valleys, of the torrents Rosaro, Mommio and Lucido meet all the course of the Aulella. In the zone it is possible to admire great landscapes, from hills to mountains with a mild climate.
