A restored 18th century honey-stone farmhouse with a private pool and gardens, set in the Madiran wine-growing area in rural Southwest France

This traditional L-shaped Gascon farmhouse was built in the 18th century in the local honey stone. It has been sympathetically restored to showcase its great character, with exposed brick and stone and ceiling beams. Maison Baylot can accommodate six adults in three bedrooms, with a set of bunkbeds for two children. A double futon on the mezzanine can accommodate two more guests. Two cots and baby paraphernalia are also available, so the house could comfortably accommodate two families. The gardens are spacious and private, with areas for play and for relaxation. A large covered pool and solar shower is next to a covered summer eating and barbeque area. For the more active, the barn accommodates a ping pong table, and there is also a basketball hoop, badminton and bikes on site.

The thick stone walls and cool tiles on the ground floor keep the house cool in the height of the summer. Entering the house, a spacious dining room features a large oak table which comfortably seats up to ten. The well equipped American-style kitchen/breakfast room includes a dishwasher, a microwave, and a coffee machine, and also has a large oak table. In the living room, a comfortable sofa and armchairs surround an open fireplace. A TV with English-language channels, and a DVD/CD player are also available. Also on the ground floor is a bathroom with a washing machine and a tumble dryer, and a separate toilet.

The garden
A wooden staircase leads up to the first floor where the three bedrooms are located. Two have king-size double beds, and one has a king-size double bed and a set of bunk beds for children. There is also a mezzanine with a double futon, and a shower room with a toilet on this floor. Maison Baylot sits on the edge of a small hamlet, surrounded by fields of maize and cattle. The gardens overlook a peaceful valley, with woods on the far side.

About the Area

Vineyards in the surrounding countryside
Maison Baylot is set in the tranquil rolling hills of the Madiran wine growing area, just four kilometres from Madiran village itself. The pretty village has a general store, a baker, two restaurants and a wine museum. Just a kilometre further up the road is a very traditional French restaurant with gardens, and there are other restaurants in the villages in the surrounding area. The town of Maubourget is just ten kilometres away, with a great traditional market every Tuesday. Maubourget has a good selection of restaurants, as well as banks, post office, supermarkets, garages, butchers, bakers and more. There are several other markets in the area on different days.

The nearby Chateau de Crouseilles offers tastings and family days
The area is famous for its cuisine, notably all forms of duck, confits and foie gras, cassoulets, and Tarbais beans; there’s also frequently a Spanish influence in the local cooking. The area all around is ideal for walking or cycling, and there are horse riding stables nearby, and there’s a large lake with water sports at the nearby town of Marsiac. This town also hosts a huge jazz festival in early August. There are plenty of wine growers in the area offering degustations (tastings), and some hold family fête days during the summer.
About the Region

The 11th century church in Madiran nearby
It’s less than an hour's drive to the famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes and the spa town of Bagneres de Bigorre at the foot of the Pyrenees. While in that area, visit the caves at Bettharan. It’s just a little further to the lower ski slopes, with skiing from December to April. A favourite excursion of the locals is to have lunch in Spain, just over an hour away. The landscape of the area is as varied as its cuisine - there are soaring mountains, a plain just north of Tarbes, and then the rolling hills of the Madiran.
