This countryside house is set in a charming village just 3km from the rural town of Novi Pazar. The village is advantageously positioned close to three distinguished archaeological sites to justify a visit: the ruins of Pliska – the capital of the First Kingdom, the remains of Veliki Preslav – Tsar Simeon made it his capital, and the Madara Horseman – a mysterious bas-relief dating back to the C3 BC and representing a horseman whose mount is trampling a lion with the assistance of a greyhound, while he holds the reigns in one hand and a wine-cup in the other. In its heyday during the First Bulgarian Kingdom (601-1018), Pliska was a sophisticated and important settlement, covering 23 square kilometers and protected by citadels on neighbouring hills. The ruins still occupy a considerable area, although most of the buildings have been reduced to low walls. As you can see from the exhibits in the museum, the settlement originally had three lines of defences: a ditch, behind which was the outer town (with workshops and the dwellings of ordinary folk), a stone wall with four gates, surrounding the inner town, and finally a brick rampart around the so called Little Palace. Between the brick and stone walls lay the two-storied Large Palace, 170ft long by 87ft wide, and the yet larger Royal Basilica, the former being supplied with piped water and central heating.
