    Introduction

    Fernie

    Rated as one of the top 10 ski resorts in the world in 2006 and in the top 5 mountain bike courses on the global circuit. Fernie is already a popular tourist destination. The ski season starts in early November and lasts until late April. There was over 4 metres of snow in the first few months of 2007 and this point, combined with 117 runs appealing to all ski levels, ensures its reputation as a popular ski destination.

    Today Fernie is over two and a half hours from the nearest airport of Calgary but with the extended facilities of Cranbrook airport from 2009, this travel time will reduce to about 40 minutes and will see the arrival of low cost air carriers.

    The new Cranbrook airfield facility will result in a further expansion of Fernie as a ski resort, as 1,000 acres of mountains are converted to ski and new developments.
