Aulla is an important town in the heart of the Valley of Lunigiana, on the confluence of two rivers, it has a train station and local shops but is only a short distance from La Spezia and the Versillian Coast. Magnificent beaches and playboy lifestyle you expect from the Italian riviera.

Also close to the rugged coastline of the Cinque Terre, Five Lands, famous for it's stunning scenery and villages that cling to the cliffs on the edge of the shore.
Genoa is without reasonable driving, where you can find all the modern conveniences of an interenational city, steeped in history.

The airport at Piza is serviced by many international airlines including economy charter flights from the UK.

Lunigiana

The name Lunigiana is thought to have come from the Roman settlement at Luni, which is now actually outside the boundaries of modern Lunigiana. You can visit the ruins there, which date from 177 B.C. The first known settlings of the Val di Magra the valley that runs through the Lunigiana along the A15 Autostrada took place a thousand or so years before Christ.

The standing carved stone stelae or statue-menhirs found in the area attest to the earlier culture, we call them the Ligui-Apuani but don’t know much more than they raised cattle.

The Val di Magra fell under Byzantine rule in the early middle ages, when Luni was the base for the Byzantine fleet which had its main port in the Island of Sardinia. The Longobards came in 643, from the tenth century, on Luni hosted a bishop installed by Emperor Otto I.
