The village of S. Andrea in Corona and nearby Calpeglio only a few hundred metres away make up a ancient rural centre of medieval origin. Built on a hill overlooking the course of the river Candigliano, the village is surrounded by more than 15 hectares of land, about 70% of which was cultivated until recently, the remaining land being land given over to forestry. S.Andrea covers around 3,000 m2 and Calpeglio 1,000 m2 with connections to both water and electric mains supplies.
A renovation project already exists although it has not yet been approved. However the project envisages 36 dwellings ranging from one bedroom apartments to detached three bedroom houses. The project also foresees swimming pools.
The two villages have never been subject to modern development and maintain there original form and characteristics and as a consequence many precious architectural details have been preserved. The buildings are constructed using sandstone blocks with trimmed and faced blocks at the corners, windows, doors and internal chimney breasts. The roofs are supported by original wooden beams many covered with their original stone tiles.
In the ancient centre in the south of the village it is still easy to see the remains of a medieval castle, outside the centre there are the characteristic outbuildings, barns, typically found around the tenants dwellings. In the north an old tower dovecote is another example of the attractive variety of the local architecture
From this vantage point it is possible to enjoy a view over the surrounding valley with colours changing as the seasons pass: the heat of golden summer yellow of wheat and sunflowers, the perfume of the multicoloured spring flowers, the intense red of the autumn leaves, the mystical white of fresh snow picking out the valley contours.
The surrounding landscape is can be divided in two parts; one half gentle slopes to the valley bottom, the other half the first foothills of the Apennines.
A single road winds its way through this landscape for a few kilometres to the bottom of the valley starting from the nearby town Mercatello sul Matauro.
S. Andrea and Calpeglio have been inhabited by local people from ancient times until the 1960?s when the last farmers decided to move to the nearby villages in order to be less isolated and take up other work. This abandonment has meant that the buildings in the villages have maintained there original qualities in the structure and materials with which they are constructed even though their use has changed throughout the centuries depending on the needs of the people at the time.
