From the main living area 3 steps lead to an elevated floor level with access to (bedroom 3) a ground floor bedroom with King Size double bed and en-suit bathroom. There are two easy chairs and a built in wardrobe. It has pale terracotta floor tiles with white fittings. Three picture windows enjoy views of the sea, cliffs and the small island of Manola. The bedroom is decorated in a very light minimalistic theme as is the whole house using white and off whites with pale drapes. The en-suite bathroom is decorated in blue and white with a very modern glass washbasin, shower and toilet. To complete the room there is a blue and white mirror and tiled borders.

From the elevated living area there is a spiral staircase to the first floor and tower which contains 2 double bedrooms, shower room and landing.

Bedroom one is really the master bedroom as this semi circular bedroom has two sets of doors and four double windows all of which open onto the spectacular circular 60 square meter first floor terrace which has the most wonderful views south, west and to the north. The terrace is very private and a great spot for sun bathing, it also has a pergola for that bit of needed shade. The sunsets from this point are spectacular.

The large double bedroom features a high circular ceiling with chestnut wooden beams from Mount Athos and the roof is tiled with stone from the Pelion. The floor tiles are terracotta colored and the walls are painted white. Furniture includes two armchairs and a built in wardrobe.

Leading off the master bedroom is a door to a good sized shower room which also links with the second bedroom.

This shower room is decorated again with a blue and white theme.

The second bedroom has three sets of windows which take in the same view as the bedroom on the ground floor (bedroom 3). This is a large double bedroom with light walls and terracotta tiles.

Also from the elevated ground floor living area the spiral staircase leads down to a large basement area
part of which could become an office, games, or computer room. There is a door leading outside.

The well-planted landscaped garden (314 m2) is enclosed by a natural stone wall and enjoys a considerable level of privacy. There is a large terrace area with pergola and Greek corner (barbecue area) There are many trees and shrubs.

This house was designed to blend in with the old village and maximize the wonderful sea and mountain views. The nearest beaches are at Megalos Mourtias and Mikro Mourtias. Megalos Mourtias is a favourite among the inhabitants of the Old Village, as they can walk down to it using a signed footpath in about 15-20 minutes. It is also highly accessible by car and/or motorbike - approx 5 minutes.

The beach is covered with smooth white pebbles. In the sea you will find silky smooth sand. There is a gentle slope, the water gradually getting deeper. You can find shade under the beach umbrellas or under the olive trees that grow a few meters away from the sea…

There are 2 tavernas on the beach and a third on the road just a few metres from the beach. All sell fresh fish and traditionally Greek food.

Contrary to its busy ‘Big brother’ the beach of Mikros Mourtias is a quiet beach with no facilities. The pebble beach is relatively small; there is a big patch of fine sand in the sea. The beach is encircled with rocky cliffs, creating breathtaking scenery. At the back of the beach are old olive trees where you can find good shade.

On its right end there is an old abandoned building that was once used by people living in the Old Village, when they wanted to visit the island of Skopelos.

Being so quiet and relatively isolated, the beach is sometimes proffered by nudists. It is also very likely that when visiting you might be the only people there, so it really feels sometimes like it is your own private beach!!!

The water at both beaches is crystal clear with a beautiful silky blue colour. In order to get the most out of your visit in any of the beaches in Alonissos, it is a good idea to bring a mask and a snorkel, so that you can enjoy the underwater beauty and colour display. Even those that are not snorkel enthusiasts should be prepared to be dazzled by the beauty of the underwater scenery of Alonissos.

Alonissos - The Island

The Island

Owning a property on Alonissos you will discover a tranquil unspoilt evergreen island of 64km² with a precipitous north-western coastline and a hilly landscape covered in pine forest, tamarisk, fig trees, olive and almond groves. The island is a paradise for artists and walkers with scores of tracks meandering through the fragrant pine woods to idyllic coves and beaches.

One of the best ways to get your bearings is to walk up to the lovely old Byzantine village of Alonissos (Chora) where the views of the island and the Aegean are stunning, especially at sunset. Chora features some wonderful traditional houses and is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, stone steps and pretty alleyways. Once deserted, the village is now coming to life again. Most of the abandoned houses have now been restored as private homes by artists, poets and writers of various nationalities, so there is a real cosmopolitan feel to the place. In Alonissos you will find a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility. Much of the village is impassable to traffic and rambling along the ancient paths you can delight in the tiny, carefully tended gardens and courtyards of the restored houses and the wild flowers that grow unabashed from the ruined houses still lying abandoned. Chora has several really good traditional tavernas, a snack bar and 3 cocktail bars with unbelievable views. There are also two supermarkets and half a dozen gift shops.

In the main town of Patitiri, achored in the crystal clear harbour waters, you will find gaily coloured caiques, ready to carry visitors to the lovely coves and beaches around Alonissos. Patitiri is also the island’s liveliest spot. The harbour is lined by waterfront tavernas where the sea food is exceptionally good. Patitiri has several small hotels, a new medical centre, several supermarkets, two bakeries, two butcher’s shops, a bank, three policemen, two doctors and a friendly multilingual priest, one bus, four taxis, vehicle hire and various craft shops.

The sea around Alonissos has been declared a Marine Conservation Park, where all human intervention is forbidden. Yachts and caiques ply between the seven uninhabited surrounding islands, which are now the sanctuary of the dolphin, monkseal, turtle, elenorus falcon and the last of Europe’s original wild goats. The beautiful island of Alonissos is the perfect choice for anyone who looks forward to owning a property and enjoying day after day of sun-filled seclusion.

Why Alonissos ?

I chose to own a house on Alonissos for several reasons. The first is that it is an area of outstanding beauty that I believe will remain safe from the dangers of mass tourism. The island is ideally located - just far enough from the mainland to deter too many tourists; and its neighbouring island, Skiathos, already has an international airport, so the likelihood of one being built on Alonissos is remote. Also, there is only sufficient water supply for the local population. The cost of a distillation plant or reservoir to supply the needs of major hotels is, in my opinion, prohibitive.

The cost of running a property on Alonissos is nominal. A couple who live relatively simply would need about £1500 a month. That would include, for example, eating out once a day, running a small car and having sufficient money to fix a hole in your roof! An allowance of £20,000 would mean you’d never have to worry about money. If you own an property in, or close to, Patitiri or the Old Village (Chora) and you are fit and energetic, a car is not necessary. Both are within walking distance of one another and so are some wonderful coves and beaches.

Beaches and Sport.

On Alonissos you’ll find everything from beaches of smooth sun-warmed pebbles to pine- fringed stretches of sand. Wherever you go, the warm crystal clear waters are perfect for swimming - and if you fancy wind-surfing, sailing, or water- skiing, these are available from the beaches at Marpounta where you can also hire canoes and pedalos. Divers, amateur fishermen and speargun fishers may enjoy their hobby in the best sea fishing grounds in Greece - with its choice lobsters, bass and red mullet. The numerous coves, outer islands and natural harbours make Alonissos a yachtsman’s paradise, both Votsi and Patiri are favourite ports of call for the island hopping flotillas. Many keen yachtsman own an Alonissos property.

Places of Interest

The remains of the ancient city walls, pot shards, tombstones and graves can be seen at Kokkinokastro. It is thought to be the site of ancient Ikos. There are ruins of an unknown ancient city at Ai- Dimitris; and at Agios Petros there is a sunken Byzantine ship (1200 AD). On the island of Gioura you can sail into the Cyclop’s Cave, decorated with varicoloured stalactites and stalagmites. Psathoura has remains of an ancient city, most of which lie submerged, for those who enjoy swimming beneath the water the spectacle is unforgettable.

The Seasons.

March, April and May are ideal if you enjoy walking or painting. The spring flowers and migratory birds are an unforgettable sight - colour is everywhere. June, July and August are the hottest months but temperatures are tempered by cooling breezes of the Meltemi (a prevailing northerly wind). It's a time for cool drinks in the shade, and enjoying the peace and quiet, and living out doors all day - and the evening too, with charcoal fires in the early dusk cooking your favourite dish whilst you open something chilled from the fridge!
September is cooler, but the sea still remains warm enough for good swimming. When the summer season finally subsides, October sees a lapse into tranquil village life. The autumn and winter months are wonderful for walking, beachcombing and really getting to know your neighbours, the local people.

Getting to Alonissos

Off the beaten tourist track it may be, but Alonissos is certainly not the most remote island of The Sporades. Direct international charter flights land on the nearby island of Skiathos for the one- hour hydrofoil cruise to Patitiri. The island is served by up to eight ferry boats or fast hydrofoils per day from the mainland ports of Aghios Konstantinos, Volos (Pelion) and Thesalonika , both connected by bus to Athens.
