Magnificent 250 degree sea views
Peaceful old village location
|
Set in a peaceful old village location with magnificent 250 degree sea views, this beautifully restored and well maintained stone village house is full of traditional features and old world charm.
The very private 67 square metre house is hidden from view from the narrow cobbled street below used only by pedestrians. Twenty two stone steps lead past trees and bushes up to the main entrance. This property is considerably higher than the street and the other village houses.
Between the street and the house the land is planted with oleander, bougainvilleas, roses, mint, geraniums, yucca and a “red apple” vine.
This house sits on a plot of 74 square metres and has two terraces, both with wonderful sea and island views.
Originally restored about 20 years ago the house was updated again about 5 years ago, including new electrical wiring and plumbing.
The roof has been well insulated for sound and to keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This makes ideal for all year round use.
The roof has guttering to prevent any damage during heavy rain storms which could be adapted to collect the rainwater if desired. Mains water is connected and there are 2 reserve water tanks (sternas) one of 5 cubic metres and another of 1.5 cubic metres. Mains electricity and telephone are also connected.
At the top of the steps locally made double chestnut doors and shutters lead into the “breakfast room”. The doors have glass windows that can be removed and replaced with fly screens, when desired.
The breakfast room (3 x 1.85 m) has stone (plaka) floor and wooden storage cabinets. A door opens in to the shower room and an arch leads into the kitchen.
The kitchen (3 x 2.25 m) has a stone (plaka) floor and the traditional looking wall and base units have been made locally with chestnut. The double marble sink has a marble splash-back, there are marble work surfaces.
The kitchen is equipped with a gas oven and hob, and an electric oven, situated beneath the original traditional chimney hood. There is a new full-sized fridge freezer.
Double doors lead from the kitchen out onto the lower, covered terrace - ideal for al-fresco dining on those warm summer evening’s.
The 3 x 2.5 m, lower terrace has a wooden dining table that can seat six people, is shaded by a pergola and the area around it is planted with roses, bougainvillea, jasmine, rosemary and a lemon tree.
The 2.25 x 1.75 m shower room has a plaka floor and is accessed from the breakfast room. Furnished with white toilet and basin, tiled walls in the shower cubicle and a built-in storage cabinet.
Hot water is provided by a gas powered heater located in the breakfast room. This also provides hot water for the kitchen.
A second arch leads from the breakfast room into the living room (5.5 x 4 m), with massive wooden beamed ceiling, Alonissos style fireplace with wood burning stove. This is the very old part of the house with very thick walls to keep the heat out in summer and the cold out in the winter. There is a cupboard and shelving built into the wall and the room features an exposed piece of bedrock under the stairs.
Wooden stairs lead up to the bedroom which measures 4.75 x 3.25 m.
This room has a wooden floor, wonderful traditional open wooden beamed ceiling and a window to the front. There are built-in wardrobes and cupboards, and a custom built bed with storage drawers. A door opens onto the 32 square metre upper terrace.
Part of the terrace is permanently covered with a tiled roof, and part is fitted with a removable awning that provides extra shade. Part of the terrace is open. There is a stone wall to the rear with a day bed; The terrace has a solar heated outside shower and the floor is surfaced with plaka.
This shower has to have the best views of any shower in the Old Village and is the only shower that the owners use from mid June until mid September.
The views from the terraces have to be seen to be believed !

This house offers the opportunity to relax and unwind in peaceful surroundings on one of the most un-spoilt Islands in the Aegean. The magnificent sea views and close proximity to shops and tavernas make this a very desirable property and would make an ideal holiday or retirement home.
The nearest beaches are at Megalos Mourtias and Mikro Mourtias. Megalos Mourtias is a favourite among the inhabitants of the Old Village, as they can walk down to it using a signed footpath in about 20-25 minutes. It is also highly accessible by car and/or motorbike - approx 5 minutes.
The beach is covered with smooth white pebbles. In the sea you will find silky smooth sand. There is a gentle slope, the water gradually getting deeper. You can find shade under the beach umbrellas or under the olive trees that grow a few meters away from the sea…
There are 2 tavernas on the beach and a third on the road just a few metres from the beach. All sell fresh fish and traditionally Greek food.
Contrary to its busy ‘Big brother’ the beach of Mikros Mourtias is a quiet beach with no facilities. The pebble beach is relatively small; there is a big patch of fine sand in the sea. The beach is encircled with rocky cliffs, creating breathtaking scenery. At the back of the beach are old olive trees where you can find good shade.
On its right end there is an old abandoned building that was once used by people living in the Old Village, when they wanted to visit the island of Skopelos.
Being so quiet and relatively isolated, the beach is sometimes proffered by nudists. It is also very likely that when visiting you might be the only people there, so it really feels sometimes like it is your own private beach!!!
The water at both beaches is crystal clear with a beautiful silky blue colour. In order to get the most out of your visit in any of the beaches in Alonissos, it is a good idea to bring a mask and a snorkel, so that you can enjoy the underwater beauty and colour display. Even those that are not snorkel enthusiasts should be prepared to be dazzled by the beauty of the underwater scenery of Alonissos.
