Gavalohori is a charming village on the Drapanos peninsula and is located in the Apokoron region only 4 kilometres from Almirida Beach and 25kms from Chania and the airport. The village is very old with an interesting history. The population is around 370 but this number swells in the summer months as relatives and visitors arrive. Gavalohori has many shops including two Cafenions and two tavernas, a pastry shop with cafe bar, bakery, three grocery stores, the village pre-school and a wonderful Folklore Museum. There are numerous Greek Orthodox churches in and around the village as well as old Venetian arches and wells, Roman tombs and an ancient olive oil factory. Many interesting walks exist around the village. A nice pleasant day can be spent just sitting outside one of Gavalohori cafenions or tavernas, listening to the locals discuss current affairs or playing the traditional 'tavli'.
