Overview: Antigua & Barbuda is a constitutional monarchy and part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Queen Elizabeth II is the monarch although most of her powers are carries out by the Governor General of Antigua & Barbuda.

The name Antigua & Barbuda is derived from the Spanish words for 'Ancient' and 'Bearded'. It is made up of Antigua, Barbuda and several small islets located at the east of the Caribbean Sea. At 17 degrees north of the Equaor, the islands are surrounded by the Leeward Islands and are all close to each other. The island nation of Antigua & Barbuda is part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, is divided into 6 parishes (Saint George, Saint John, Saint Mary, Saint Paul, Saint Peter, Saint Philip) and 2 dependencies (Barbuda, Redonda) and has a population of approximately 82,000.

Antigua & Barbuda has its' own army called the R.A.B.D.F. (Royal Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force) and numbers approximately 250. It is responsible for internal security, the protection of fishing rights, prevention of drug smuggling and the prevention of marine pollution.

Located to the south of the islands are the Caribbean islands of St Lucia, Barbados, Montserrat, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Anguilla, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Eustatius, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.
